Knoxville community remembers 161 people who died this year while experiencing homelessness

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Homeless Memorial Service has been held each year in Knoxville since 2009. It’s a nationwide event held around the longest night of the year, bringing attention to living and often dying without a permanent home.

This year, a crowd heard 161 names or initials read out, each representing a life lost this year.

Addie Arbach, co-founder of a day center in Knoxville, said those are only the ones that are known. She said there are more who die each year, but their names and stories go unknown…
