New Tennessee laws going into effect in 2026

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Many new laws are scheduled to go into effect in Tennessee on January 1, 2026, including the following:

New hemp law

New guidance on hemp-derived cannabinoid products is scheduled to go into effect on January 1. A major aspect of this is a ban on anything with a THCA concentration of 0.3% or more by dry weight and a ban on products with any amount of THCp.

Tennessee bill targets AI trained to hurt, manipulate people

Domestic violence offender registry

Known as “Savanna’s Law,” this legislation is meant to create a public registry of repeat domestic violence offenders. It is named after a Robertson County Sheriff’s deputy who was murdered in 2022.

Markers on non-citizen driver licenses

Senate Bill 6002 makes it so non-citizens can only get temporary driver licenses, not regular driver licenses. These temporary licenses will have a distinctive mark.
