Cat illness affecting Sioux Falls Humane Society

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A month after battling canine distemper, the Sioux Falls Humane Society is facing another health challenge, but this time it’s impacting the cats.

The Sioux Falls Humane Society has paused all cat adoptions and surrenders after one of their cats became severely sick.

“We immediately go into who was this cat in contact with? What vaccinations do they have? Where did they come from? What areas of the shelter have they been in?” Community Outreach Director Dana Konzem said.

Shelter staff said the cat recently arrived in a group of cats that all came from the same location. They noticed it had fallen extremely sick yesterday. Staff are testing any cats that may have been in close contact. As a precaution, staff have separated high risk cats from the rest of the shelter’s animals until testing is complete…
