This week, the city of Birmingham approved a funding agreement with the Jimmie Hale Mission to help construct a new, year-round service center for unhoused residents in Birmingham.

Birmingham commits $1M for new Jimmie Hale Mission homeless shelter

Founded in 1944, the Jimmie Hale Mission is a Birmingham-based charity mission dedicated to providing “pathways to recovery from the root causes of homelessness and unhealthy living through [its] proven process of compassion, guidance and accountability grounded in Christian faith.” Through its programs and facilities, the Jimmie Hale Mission offers safe shelter, meals and other services to the city’s homeless population through three facilities in the Birmingham area:

In October, the Jimmie Hale Mission announced plans for a new emergency shelter to further help the city’s homeless population. According to a City of Birmingham press release, the new facility will include:

  • Nearly 100 dignified shelter beds
  • Family rooms
  • Dining and social spaces
  • Laundry facilities
  • Dedicated areas for case management, healthcare, legal assistance and employment support

Under the agreement, the City of Birmingham will provide $250,000 per year for four years—a total $1M city investment—to support the construction of the new service center.
