Attempted murder charge against Staunton man heads to grand jury

STAUNTON — A man suspected of shooting into an SUV last summer in broad daylight, seriously injuring another man who was picking up his children, had an attempted murder and several other charges certified to the grand jury on Dec. 17 in Staunton General District Court following a preliminary hearing.

Charles “Penny” Smith, 44, of Staunton, has been jailed since his arrest.

The shooting took place at about 9 a.m. on Aug. 30 in the 100 block of Gray Avenue in Staunton, where two nearby yard sales were being held. The victim, Michael Orebaugh, testified at the hearing that he was shot at multiple times…
