State Building Commission approves funding for Fitchburg juvenile correctional facility

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin State Building Commission approved funding for a juvenile correctional facility in Fitchburg, Gov. Tony Evers announced Wednesday.

The facility would be designed to house about 32 boys and eight girls and would be located near the Department of Corrections’ Grow Academy site. Construction is expected to wrap up by late 2028.

This is the latest step in Evers’ effort to close the  Lincoln Hills and Copper Lake Schools. The youth prisons have been the subject of scrutiny over the last decade, with a lawsuit in the early 2010s detailing allegations of child abuse and excessive use of force…
