No criminal charges to be filed after man died in Madison police custody in 2024

MADISON, Wis. — The is no potential criminal liability for the Madison officers involved in the arrest and transfer of 32-year-old Richard Johnson, who died in police custody last year.

Johnson was taken into custody at the Best Western on Annamark Drive on Dec. 30, 2024, following a foot chase. Police said he was a suspect in a vehicle theft.

EMS evaluated Johnson at the scene, and he was taken to the Dane County Jail. However, upon arriving at the jail he was found unresponsive. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he died the next day…
