ACSO gives a thousand children Christmas gifts

NEW SCOTLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) -The Albany County Sheriff’s Office spent all year getting ready for its Hilltown Christmas program. Hundreds of families were invited to the New Scotland station by local organizations to pick out free gifts for all of their children.

Sheriff Craig Apple and his wife Cheryl said the need has grown exponentially as they help make sure 1,000 kids have presents. “We see the prices of food and groceries and toys and even for us this year, we spent thousands more than we anticipated.” Around $30,000 was spent at Walmart alone.

Toys include everything from stuffed animals and stocking stuffers to board games and even bikes. But not every gift is a want. Some are needs like soap and deodorant.

“We have blankets and hair dryers and a lot of personal need stuff. They’ll be gone and so it just goes to show you that the need is out there,” added Sheriff Apple. One family arrived 30 minutes early but doors opened at 9 a.m. and parents were guided through the aisles in groups of ten every ten minutes.
