Church congregations petition for ancestors to be exhumed from under major roadway

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) -– Members of two congregations that once shared a church are pushing to have their ancestors exhumed from a historic cemetery that is partially under a major roadway in Montgomery County.

From 1825 to 1964, Mount Zion Methodist Episcopal Church and Cemetery was located at the corner of Seminary Place and Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring. The land was then bought and paved over.

Once Mount Zion permanently closed, the congregations split into Silver Spring United Methodist Church and Van Buren United Methodist Church in Northwest DC…
