COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Taxpayers across the state say they are in danger of being priced out of their homes due to high property taxes. On Friday, Gov. Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) signed five bills into law, all aiming to relieve some of that tax burden. Supporters say homeowners could start saving hundreds of dollars on their tax bills very soon.
“These five bills are the most impactful property tax reforms that Ohioans have seen in almost fifty years,” said Rep. David Thomas (R-Jefferson) who helped usher each of these bills through the legislature to the Governor’s desk. “These are huge, these will save billions and billions of dollars over the next five years.”

The slate of laws signed by the Governor will, among other things, increase owner-occupancy tax credits, cap unvoted levies to the rate of inflation, and empower county budget committees to avoid excessive levies. DeWine said the tax credits will be paid by the state, meaning, “there will be no loss of revenue to local school districts or other local entities.”
Lawmakers have been under pressure to reform the state’s tax policy as a citizen-led effort seeks to put a referendum on the ballot that would abolish property taxes permanently, which DeWine said would be a “grave mistake.”…
