New Iberia terrorism suspect to be held without bond: Court

NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) — The New Iberia man charged in connection with an alleged terrorist plot to attack New Orleans will be held without bond as he awaits court proceedings.

The order, dated Thursday and signed by Magistrate Judge Carol Whitehurst, directs Micah Legnon to be detained pending trial due to “clear and convincing evidence that no condition or combination of conditions of release will reasonably assure the safety of any other person and the community.”

Legnon was arrested Dec. 12 on federal charges of threats to interstate commerce.

According to the order, Legnon’s case satisfies several of the criteria needed to deny bond in a federal criminal case, including:

  • The offense charged is a crime of violence
  • Weight of evidence against the defendant is strong
  • The defendant’s release poses serious danger to any person or the community

Legnon was arrested Dec. 12 on U.S. 90 by the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office. One assault rifle, one pistol, one gas canister, and body armor were recovered from his vehicle, officials said.
