LINCOLN, NEB — Bryan Health has achieved a milestone in medical technology by successfully performing its first VELYS Robotic-Assisted knee replacement surgery. The procedure, conducted by Dr. Brad Webb of the Nebraska Orthopaedic Center, took place on Dec. 17 at Bryan West Campus in Lincoln. The patient, Sue Henjes from Gretna, was discharged the following day.
The VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution utilizes advanced software, an infrared camera, optical trackers, and artificial intelligence to provide real-time data during surgery. It works in conjunction with the ATTUNE knee system, a knee implant customized to each patient’s anatomy. This system allows the surgeon to maintain complete control while guiding the robotic-assisted device to remove damaged bone and precisely position the knee implant accurately. The design is tailored to fit each patient specifically, promoting increased flexibility, stability, and faster recovery.
Dr. Brad Webb explained the significance of the surgery, stating, “This first case was really, it’s a young female in terms of, we think of total joint she’s in her late fifties and a knee that really was kind of bone-on-bone and most of this is through genetics, through different things in life, injuries that led her to this point.” He emphasized the importance of quality-of-life improvements for Henjes, noting that previous non-operative management had not been effective…
