Suspect in homicide near University District Kroger sentenced to two decades in prison

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A man charged in connection with a fatal shooting near a north Columbus Kroger supermarket will spend at least two decades in prison.

According to court records, DeShawn Caldwell, who was accused in the murder of 51-year-old Paul Allgood, was sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in prison after receiving consecutive sentences on two of five total charges after an amended plea agreement.

Caldwell, originally charged with murder, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and discharging a firearm on or near a prohibited premise. A Franklin County Court of Common Pleas judge issued a sentence of 11-to-16 ½ years on the first count, and nine years on the second, for a total aggregate sentence of 20-to-25 ½ years in prison.

The charges stem from an altercation between Caldwell and Allgood, who were in the 1300 block of North High Street, near the Kroger Supermarket just south of the Ohio State campus. Allgood was found shot at around 2:30 p.m. with a gunshot wound before he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital nearly two hours later…
