Madison school district won’t act on complaints against principal

A group of parents at Van Hise Elementary is calling on the Madison school district to investigate the school’s principal, while the district says it has found no evidence of wrongdoing.

Since Rebecca Stein started as Van Hise’s principal in the 2023-24 school year, parents have raised concerns about her leadership at a PTO meeting and three public comment periods at School Board meetings. At the most recent School Board meeting this week, one parent said she removed her child from Van Hise and the district in part because of Stein’s conduct toward her son.

More than 200 people are part of an email list called “Concerned Van Hise Parents,” which is managed by a small group of parents, including Amy Robertson, whose step-son attends Van Hise on Madison’s west side. The school, surrounded by mostly single-family homes, enrolls about 400 students…
