As the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey will be administered to students within the next few weeks, the Douglas County School District has returned to the opt-out approach that has been used in previous survey years.
Earlier this year, on Sept. 9, the previous board of education changed the district’s participation model for the survey from opt-out to opt-in. However, Treasurer Valerie Thompson argued that there was an “inappropriate verbal vote” that directed staff to administer the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey as an opt-in option only.
“This exceeded board authority,” Thompson said. “It did not follow established governance and policy processes that we have as a board.”…
