Forecasters Say Confidence Is High That Rainfall Will Peak From Christmas Eve Into Christmas Day

Forecasters are warning Southern California residents to prepare for a wet Christmas week, as an atmospheric river is expected to bring widespread rain to the Los Angeles region beginning early next week.

The National Weather Service in Los Angeles said confidence is high that rain will return to Southwest California between Dec. 23 and Dec. 26, with precipitation likely peaking from Christmas Eve into Christmas Day. While the precise timing and rainfall totals remain uncertain, meteorologists said rain during the holiday period is “virtually certain.”

The atmospheric river is expected to begin moving into Southern California late Sunday night into Monday. Rain could start as early as Tuesday afternoon, initially arriving as scattered and light showers before intensifying by Tuesday evening.
