KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Zoo Knoxville’s recently opened Smoky Night Lights show is now closed until further notice after strong storms moving through the region Thursday evening caused significant damage to Timber Loop, the event’s boardwalk, and lighting infrastructure.
Zoo Knoxville announced the closure Friday afternoon. The zoo said out of an abundance of caution and with guest safety as its top priority, Zoo Knoxville’s Smoky Night Lights was closed while damage is fully assessed and repairs are made. The light show opened at the Zoo last month.

Alongside the release, the zoo also shared photos of the damage, capturing a tree that had crashed through the boardwalk, a canopy-style screen, and more. One photo in particular shows the base of the tree that was uprooted during the storm.
“We are grateful to share that all animals, habitats, and team members remained safe throughout the storm. The Zoo remains open to guests, though some areas are temporarily closed as assessments and repairs continue,” Zoo Knoxville said in its announcement.
