‘Conquering their independence’: New program teaches public transportation skills to adults with neurological disabilities

HORRY COUTY, SC (WMBF) – A new program in Horry County is teaching adults with autism and other disabilities how to navigate public transportation as part of SOS Care’s mission of inclusion and independence.

The program at Oak Tree Farm, an affordable housing complex where adults with intellectual disabilities live independently, is training residents to use public buses, paratransit and ride-sharing services like Uber.

Transportation addresses major barrier

Transportation is one of the biggest barriers for adults with autism, according to Kathi Grace, director of marketing and grants.
