A homeless man in Leesburg was arrested with a broken pipe after being chased on foot by an officer all the way to Walgreens.
An officer recognized 34-year-old Jonathan Dwight Kirkland standing near his bicycle outside Sunoco, located at 737 S 14th St., at 11:40 p.m. Tuesday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. She knew him from prior encounters and that he had an active warrant for failure to appear in court for criminal mischief.
As such, she called out his name, to which he responded. She said his name again when asking a question, but he stated that was not his name. She told him to pull his hood down, and he advised that she had the wrong person. She then walked around his bicycle, to which he took off running southbound, the report said.
The officer caught up to Kirkland at Walgreens, located at 901 S 14th St., and detained him. She subsequently searched his person to find a glass bowl with a plastic hose taped to the end inside the right cargo pocket of his pants. It had burnt residue inside, consistent with narcotic use, and the glass part had broken in his pocket, the report said…
