Fifth grader launches Winter Gift Pantry with inspiration from Boise elementary school

GARDEN CITY, Idaho — A Garden City nonprofit is turning simple acts of generosity into a community-wide holiday tradition, thanks to the idea of a 10-year-old student at Taft Elementary School.

The Winter Gift Pantry — launched by fifth grader Joleen Owens and her mother, Alexandra — came together in just two weeks with support from The Collective Healing Lab. What began as a school project where students could shop for donated gifts to give loved ones has now expanded into a free community event.

“I like community events, especially when there’s no cost required,” Joleen said. “You can just come and have fun and maybe make a new best friend.”…
