Catholic Central students bring holiday cheer to those in need

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Students at Catholic Central High School had one final assignment before the holiday break: Turning wish lists into wrapped gifts and delivering them to dozens of families in need across the city.

The “Christmas Family” tradition dates back to the 1960s. On Friday, the teens delivered around 200 gifts to 181 people.

“The past couple weeks, we’ve just been shopping for them and wrapping their gifts and getting them all ready to deliver,” said Kendall Outwater, a senior at Catholic Central. “To know that we’re really making a difference in somebody’s Christmas is really nice.”

Outwater rode in a car packed to the brim with presents, alongside her friends and classmates, Addison Jones and Ruthie Radgens. Even icy roads couldn’t slow them down. They were all assigned to the same family and got a Wishlist for each kid. The wishlists were a reminder that Christmas isn’t always about toys. Many asked for basics like soap, hygiene products and coats and gloves to get through winter…
