How A Student’s Lego Model Celebrates Michigan’s Pere Marquette Train

A Hungarian student from Szombathely, Hungary, from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, is hoping his recent Lego model gets picked up by the official team at Lego to help recreate one of the most iconic trains of all time, the original Polar Express, which was inspired by a train here in Michigan.

Dávid Molnár submitted his idea to have Lego create the Pere Marquette from Owosso, the original and real Polar Express train, back on September 11 of 2024. He is now halfway to a goal of 5000 people to support this idea.

Lego will allow people to submit ideas, and if there is enough support for it, I will consider actually recreating these ideas. The Pere Marquette is a legendary train, and one that Dávid has said he has taken great interest in, according to a post from Friends and Community Shiawassee County News and Views:

Over the last few years I’ve designed a highly detailed LEGO model of Pere Marquette 1225 – the Lima‑built 1941 steam locomotive preserved and operated at the Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso, and known as the real inspiration for the Polar Express. I’ve submitted the model to LEGO Ideas, and the goal is to reach 10,000 supporters this year so it can be considered as an official LEGO set in time for the locomotive’s 85th birthday.
