Rare Tropical Bird Blown Hundreds of Miles North by Storm Winds Now Recovering in Massachusetts

A tropical bird more at home in the steamy wetlands of the Deep South crash-landed in a New Bedford backyard Friday night, carried hundreds of miles north by fierce storm winds. The exhausted Purple Gallinule, a brilliantly colored marsh bird rarely seen this far north, is now receiving round-the-clock care through the New England Wildlife Center’s Cape Cod hospital, where staff are cautiously optimistic about its chances.
