LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — James Canty III is the new world champion of chessboxing.
Chessboxing is a hybrid sport combining alternating rounds of speed chess and boxing. Someone wins by checkmate, knockout, or when time runs out in chess. The sport was invented by French comic book artist Enki Bilal and was adapted by Dutch performance artist lepe Rubingh. It subsequently grew into a competitive sport.
