Woman found dead in LES apartment shakes local community

LOWER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (PIX11) — Neighbors in a Lower East Side housing complex are shaken after a woman was found dead inside her apartment just days before Christmas. The Medical Examiner’s Office is calling the death of 76‑year‑old Zhu Hou a homicide.

Investigators spent hours late Friday night combing through evidence at the Knickerbocker Village complex on Monroe Street. Officers responded around 8 p.m. to a 911 call for an unconscious female. Upon arrival, police say the woman was unconscious and unresponsive, with trauma to the head and body.

Outside the complex, video showed evidence bags, crime scene investigators, and the medical examiner gathering clues into what happened. The discovery has rattled a community made up largely of older residents.

“I feel very shocked first and foremost, now this has raised many concerns to me, many old people live here, many elders so this should be investigated,” one resident said.
