MTS considers first fare hike in over 15 years as budget deficit looms

SAN DIEGO — The Metropolitan Transit System is preparing to unveil proposed fare increases that would take effect next year as the agency tackles projected budget deficits topping $100 million over the next few years. A new survey finds that most MTS riders would support a fare hike over cuts to bus or trolley service.

The proposed increases would raise the current cost of a single ride from $2.50 to either $2.75 or $3, while annual MTS passes could jump from $72 to $79 or $86. The fare hike would bring in an estimated $10 to $15 million in increased revenue for MTS annually.
