Winter solstice brings rain to San Diego, but longer days ahead

(FOX 5/KUSI) — Sunday is officially the shortest day and longest night of the year for the Northern Hemisphere.

While this year’s winter solstice also comes with rain on the radar for San Diegans, on the bright side at least it means longer days are ahead of us.

What is the winter solstice?

The winter solstice is when Earth’s northern axis tilts the farthest away from the sun — this means people in the Northern Hemisphere will see the fewest hours of daylight.

The solstice happens around 7 a.m., however it only lasts a few moments and isn’t something that’s easily noticeable…
