Years of stalled demolition at DeGaulle Manor frustrate Algiers residents

NEW ORLEANS — Years of failed attempts to demolish the abandoned DeGaulle Manor apartment complex in Algiers have left nearby residents frustrated and worried about safety, as the city once again pauses plans.

The long-vacant complex was included in Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s “Dirty Dozen” demolition initiative announced in 2024. Since then, multiple demolition efforts have stalled, most recently after city officials acknowledged they could not afford to pay a contracted vendor amid New Orleans’ ongoing financial crisis.

“I think it’s time for them to tear it down,” said one resident who lives a few hundred yards from the property. “Stop talking and do what they need to do.”…
