I wish I could be surprised that members of the Alabama State Board of Education are upset about a social studies textbook.
But then I look at the despicable treatment of the Islamic School of Alabama, which withdrew plans to relocate to Hoover following a wave of threats. U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville made false and reprehensible claims comparing the school to a terrorist training ground. That’s language the Ku Klux Klan would have happily employed against Catholics 100 years ago.
I don’t know if Rev. James Coyle — killed in Birmingham in 1921 for officiating an interracial marriage — is in that social studies textbook. If he were, we might have a future where adults in this state don’t feel comfortable threatening people based on their religion…
