MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A routine traffic stop turned deadly when a driver crashed into a tree on South Fulton Street in midtown Mobile, police said.
The incident began around 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, when Mobile police officers observed a stolen vehicle traveling in the area of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue and N. Lafayette Street. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver refused to comply, leading officers on a pursuit that ended in the 100 block of S. Fulton Street where the vehicle struck a tree and caught fire, police said.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was taken to a local hospital for injuries…
