Prayer vigil held at Delaney Hall to draw attention to conditions

Ten days after the first reported death at Delaney Hall, the federal immigrant detention center on the outskirts of Newark, a group of immigrant advocates, community leaders, family members of detainees and Lutheran pastors held a prayer vigil outside its walls.

The vigil on Dec. 22 was meant to draw attention to conditions inside and out of the facility.

Jean Wilson Brutus, a 41-year-old Haitian national who was detained at the facility, died there on Dec. 12, and was the first reported death at the facility since its opening. He was one of four immigrants who died while in detention by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement between Dec. 12 and 15, according to Reuters.
