ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s a tradition that’s been running for nearly 80 years in one of Albuquerque’s oldest neighborhoods. The Barelas Community Center hosted Las Posadas de Barelas, an annual event, re-enacting the story of Mary and Joseph traveling through Bethlehem.
Participants in the event made their way to eight homes, replicating the number of times Mary and Joseph were turned away. They ended their journey at Sacred Heart Church.
The crowd got to enjoy live performances from matachines dancers and musicians as they walked through the neighborhood lit by luminarias. “It’s really a honor to be part of it, to witness it, and to also take part and support it because it’s just such a beautiful tradition that brings together the whole community and fills the neighborhood with, you know, light and dancing and music,” said Sean Potter, president of the Barelas Neighborhood Association…
