Retired Waynesboro police officer roughing it for a day

The first full day of winter has arrived and that means former Waynesboro police officer Brian Edwards will spend 24 hours in a tent in front of the Waynesboro YMCA, all in an effort to raise awareness for the local unsheltered population as the calendar heads into the coldest months of the year.

Edwards, now a teacher at the Valley Academy Regional Alternative School and board chairperson for the Waynesboro Area Refuge Mission (WARM), will spend 24 hours outside beginning Dec. 22 as part of the “No Home for the Holidays: A Stay WARM Challenge.”

Founded in 2011, WARM provides cold-weather shelters through local churches along with transitional housing and outreach programs. The organization currently provides temporary shelter sites in Staunton, Augusta County, and Waynesboro, along with temporary housing and supportive services for women and children…
