The Standard reported on some of the history of the W.T. Thomas School in Cumberland City which is being torn down. We accidentally put in last week’s story, “The Cumberland City Academy was founded in 1983 and opened for school.” It was 1893 when the school was founded. It was destroyed by fire and reopened as W.T. Thomas. The school reopened September 1, 1915 and became W.T. Thomas School in honor of W.T. In 1921, the school was conveyed back to Mrs. Thomas, W.T’s wife. Also in 1921, she deeded the property to the Stewart County Board of Education.
