9 new measles cases reported in Upstate Outbreak, 144 total

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSPA) – The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) reported 9 new cases measles since Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases in the Upstate outbreak to 144.

Officials said of the new cases, four are household members of known cases, one resulted from exposure at the Way of Truth Church in Inman, one resulted from school exposure, and three remain unknown.

Of the 144 cases, 31 are reported to be under the age of 5, 101 are reported to be between the ages of 5 and 17, and 12 are reported to be over the age of 18. 137 of the cases are unvaccinated, three were partially vaccinated, one was vaccinated, and three remain unknown.

Based on the new cases, the DPH has identified exposures at New Prospect Elementary. 56 students are currently in quarantine, and are scheduled to be able to return to classes by January 2.
