From street life to service: A Raleigh man is giving back to his community

RALEIGH, N.C. — Brandon Anderson started an initiative 10 years ago called Unity in the Community to give blankets out on Christmas Eve.

“Me and my friend, we were riding past Moore Square, and we saw a family, all under a blanket. Under one blanket. And it was, like, very cold. And he didn’t like that idea, so he said, we got to do something,” Anderson said.

It was a short-lived idea. A few days after that encounter Anderson was sent to prison, and while there, his friend James Alston was murdered because of gang violence…
