San Diego Fire Chief Robert Logan has officially joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., becoming a member of the fraternity’s San Diego graduate chapter, Zeta Sigma Lambda, as part of the Fall 2025 line known as the Keepers of Ma’at. A native of San Diego, Logan was appointed in 2024 as the 19th Fire Chief of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, making history as the third African American to hold the position in the department’s 134-year history.
According to his bio, Chief Logan became an emergency medical technician in 1999 and joined the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department as a firefighter in 2000. Over the course of his career, he has served in nearly every rank within the department. Most recently, he served as deputy chief of employee services, where he oversaw recruitment, health and safety, training, professional standards, and community outreach. He has also led special operations units, including air operations, hazardous materials, the metro arson strike team, and emergency management for major events.
Beyond his leadership within the department, Chief Logan is deeply invested in education and workforce development. He teaches at Miramar College’s Fire Academy and co-founded Lincoln High School’s Fire Technology Program, the only program of its kind in the San Diego Unified School District, designed to introduce high school students to careers in fire and emergency services. He also helped bring California’s first Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee Pre-Apprenticeship EMT program to Southeastern San Diego and remains an active member of Women in Fire, a national organization focused on empowering women in the fire service.
Chief Logan has also contributed to national conversations on equity in emergency response.
