Mary Nelson’s Christmas giveaway helps thousands: Thousands of children’s Christmases were made a little brighter Saturday during Mary Nelson’s annual giveaway of toys and clothing. Nelson, a longtime community advocate, hosted her yearly giveaway at Nottingham High School, where nearly 4,000 children signed up to receive presents and clothes. Nelson estimated more than 4,200 children were served by late afternoon. Some families arrived without being registered, but Nelson said she would not turn anyone away. Story, photos. Syracuse’s first month of school-zone cameras brings eye-popping numbers and some good news: Syracuse issued more than 21,000 tickets for speeding and red-light violations in school zones in November, city officials said. If the city collects on all of the November tickets, drivers will pay more than $1 million. The good news? City officials said drivers are starting to slow down near schools.
Afghan father, young daughter die in Clay house fire: Obaid Noorzai came to the United States in 2023 from Afghanistan determined to build a safer life for his family. Four months ago, Noorzai and his wife bought their own home in Clay. Early Friday morning, their dreams of a safe, new life were tragically cut short. Noorzai, 33, and the couple’s 3-year-old daughter, Gabeen, were killed in an overnight house fire in their new home in the Bayberry neighborhood of Clay, according to family friends…
