A Delaware State Police trooper was killed in the active shooter incident at the Wilmington Division of Motor Vehicles near New Castle that prompted the abrupt closure of the center mid-afternoon on Tuesday, Dec. 23, according to state authorities.
Delaware State Police Col. William Crotty and other state officials addressed the public for the first time just after 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 23, bringing to light what led to the death of a state trooper at the Delaware DMV location.
What police, officials say happened at the DMV
The trooper, who has not yet been publicly identified, was working an overtime assignment behind a reception desk when a 44-year-old man entered the DMV, according to Delaware State Police spokesperson Cpl. Raushan Rich.
