Detroit man forced to repay Michigan after wrongful conviction settlement

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A Detroit man who served 25 years in prison after a wrongful conviction has been ordered to reimburse the state of Michigan $1.2 million after receiving a $7.5 million settlement from the city of Detroit in 2022.

Desmond Ricks, 56, was convicted of shooting and killing a friend outside a restaurant in 1992, according to the Associated Press. Ricks’ conviction was overturned, and he was released from prison in 2017. A judge reopened his conviction case in 2016 following a request from the Innocence Clinic at the University of Michigan Law School.
