‘Deplorable conditions’: ZooTampa welcomes two red foxes rescued from fur farm

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — ZooTampa welcomed two residents to their new forever home this week, after the pair of red foxes were rescued from a dire situation earlier this year.

In January, Humane World for Animals, previously known as the Humane Society, rescued over 300 animals from a fur and urine farm in Ohio after the owner died, creating a massive animal welfare crisis. In addition to foxes, the farm also housed raccoons, wolf-dog hybrids, skunks, opossums and coyotes in what Humane World for Animals described as “deplorable conditions.”

The animals were being raised as exotic pets, held captive for urine farming and slaughtered for their fur, Humane World for Animals said. Many were missing toes, ears, tails and limbs, which veterinarians believed were caused by getting caught in wire cages or steel-jaw traps that were found around the property.

Over the course of the year, many of the animals have been rehomed to zoos and wildlife rehabilitation centers across the country, and ZooTampa was lucky enough to become the new home for foxes named Seth and Sadie.

The pair underwent comprehensive evaluations to ensure they were in good health, and then officially moved into the Florida Wilds habitat at the zoo.

Seth has a traditional reddish coat with a fluffy, white-tipped tail. Sadie has a more unique appearance, with a silver/black coat and golden brown eyes.
