McLaren, contractor cited for improper asbestos handling

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Demolition efforts at the old McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital located off S Pennsylvania Street in Lansing have been complicated by a citation from the state.

Demolition of the building, which has sat vacant for three years, is currently underway, but authorities with the State of Michigan say the onsite contractor isn’t following proper safety protocols — citing them for mishandling “cancer-causing agents.”

Demolition is currently underway, but last Thursday, both McLaren Health Care and their on-site contractor Asbestos Abatement Inc. received a violation notice from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy regarding their handling of asbestos at the site.

The contractor declined to comment, but McLaren said in a statement to 6 News that they are committed to safety and are asking EGLE to remove them from the citation, saying Asbestos Abatement is responsible for asbestos handling on the job site…
