Alabama to receive $4.9 million in Mercedes-Benz emissions settlement

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that the state will receive approximately $4.9 million as part of a $149.7 million multistate settlement with Mercedes-Benz USA and Mercedes-Benz Group AG over emissions violations.

Marshall joined a coalition of all 50 attorneys general in the settlement, which resolves allegations that Mercedes sold diesel vehicles equipped with illegal and undisclosed software designed to bypass emissions standards. In Alabama, officials identified about 11,906 affected vehicles that were sold or registered in the state.

According to state officials, more than 211,000 diesel vehicles manufactured between 2008 and 2016 were equipped with defeat devices that reduced emissions controls during normal driving, allowing vehicles to exceed legal nitrogen oxide limits.
