Conroe ISD is weighing a policy change that would allow teachers to rent district facilities for private, paid tutoring sessions—a move leaders say could help educators earn extra income while offsetting the cost of keeping school campuses open after hours.
The idea surfaced during a recent board discussion as administrators reviewed the district’s facility rental finances, which have increasingly failed to cover their own costs. Based on figures presented to trustees, Conroe ISD lost about $150,000 on facility rentals between January and August of last year. During that period, the district generated roughly $488,000 in rental revenue but spent nearly $639,000 on expenses such as staffing, utilities and supplies, according to reporting by The Courier.
How Conroe ISD’s plans compare to other school districts for a 4 hour time slot on the weekend at a high school cafeteria:
- Conroe ISD: $700
- Humble ISD: $980
- Klein ISD: $648 (three hours)
- Katy ISD: $660
- Spring ISD: $850 (three hours)
- Tomball ISD: $700
“All we are trying to do is recover the cost,” Chris McCord, the district’s assistant superintendent of operations, explained. “We are not looking to make money, and we are certainly not looking to lose money.”…
