Celebrating Kwanzaa: Culture, Community, and Unity at the Carver Museum!

AUSTIN, Texas — Kwanzaa is a time to celebrate heritage, unity, and the power of community, and Austinites will soon have the opportunity to take part in a meaningful celebration at the George Washington Carver Museum.

M’Kina Tapscott and Cathy Runnels joined Sierra Waggoner to share how the upcoming Kwanzaa event brings tradition, learning, and togetherness to families across the city.

Runnels explained that Kwanzaa is often misunderstood.

“Kwanzaa is actually a cultural celebration. A lot of people think that Kwanzaa is a religious celebration, but it’s a celebration of Black American culture, and it started in the 1960s,” Runnels said.

This year’s celebration promises a full day of culture, creativity, and connection. Festivities begin at noon with a makers market featuring Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs, followed by the official Kwanzaa celebration at 1 p.m…
