Progress continues despite winter strain at Bishop Dudley House

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – Bishop Dudley House always gets extremely busy during the winter months, but ever since their weapons detection system was destroyed by a resident a few weeks ago, check-in lasts a while, and residents are outside waiting in the cold for longer periods of time.

“We’re over capacity every single night of the year,” said Madeline Shields, Executive Director of Bishop Dudley House.

“We have a hundred beds here at Bishop Dudley House. I think there may have been one night in 2025 that we did not hit a hundred or over, and it was last summer at some point. And so the city code allows us to go to 155. That’s 55% over capacity that we have as our maximum limit. We are seeing right around that number.”…
