Oregon leads in child homelessness; local nonprofit offers crucial aid

EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon ranks first in the nation for unsheltered child homelessness, a staggering 14 times higher than the national average. In response, Looking Glass New Roads is working to improve the quality of life for homeless youth aged 16 to 24. A key part of their support includes providing clean clothes, a simple yet vital service.

Dayne Sworensen, On Point area manager, highlighted the importance of this service: “We get up every day and we take things for granted and don’t think about the fact that somebody out there is wearing dirty clothes and doesn’t really have the option to have that dignity of being able to have clean clothes.”

On Point Credit Union recently donated $22,000 to purchase a new washer and dryer, addressing a significant challenge for the unhoused. Ashley Kirkhart, Looking Glass director, said, “We are open seven days a week and offer basic needs like laundry and food services to our young people in our community.”…
