WASHINGTON (7News) — The District is kicking off 2026 with a wave of legislative changes, so here is a list of the most important ones to be aware of.
Fiscal Year 2026 Local Budget Act of 2025
In July, the D.C. Council passed Mayor Muriel Bowser’s nearly $22 billion budget for 2026.
Robert F. Kennedy Campus Redevelopment Act of 2025
In September, the D.C. Council passed an amended bill to bring a new Commanders stadium to the Robert F. Kennedy Stadium campus.
Emergency Rental Assistance Reform Amendment Act of 2025
The bill will provide more clarity over the definition of qualifying emergency situation. It would also “permit a court to enter a stay, rather than require a court to enter a stay, when a tenant submits documentation to the court demonstrating that he or she has a pending Emergency Rental Assistance Program application,” the law reads.
District of Columbia Housing Authority Stabilization and Reform Temporary Amendment Act of 2025
This is an emergency law to temporarily replace the leadership of the D.C. Housing Authority with a new ‘Reform Board’ to fix and improve how the agency is run.
Official Sports Capital of the United States Designation Act of 2025
This designates the District of Columbia as the “Official Sports Capital of the United States” and requires Events DC to develop a “plan to promote, support, and enhance the District’s status as the nation’s premier destination for sports events, teams, and activities.”…
