Gaston man accused of killing family members appeals his case

A man who killed his daughter and daughter-in-law in 2018 by driving his Jeep into a restaurant where his family was seated has filed a motion asking that his conviction be vacated.

Roger Self, 70, pleaded guilty in 2021 to second-degree murder in the deaths of his daughter, Katelyn Self, and daughter-in-law, Amanda George Self. Superior Court Judge Athena Brooks sentenced Self to 38 to 48 years in prison.

Self was arrested in 2018 after he drove a Jeep into the restaurant where his family was eating after attending a Sunday morning church service, killing Katelyn and Amanda and injuring Self’s wife, Dianne, and son, Josh, who was then a Gaston County Police officer and the husband of Amanda Self.

Reason for the plea

In a motion filed in November, Self argued that his defense attorney, Rick Beam, did not adequately represent him and essentially helped the state win Self a “de facto life sentence.”…
