Thousands of medical records found in auctioned storage unit

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Thousands of medical records containing sensitive patient information were discovered in a Memphis storage unit that went up for auction after the owner failed to pay rent for three months.

Jason Lederfine, who buys storage units as a hobby, found the records on Monday after acquiring a unit through auction. The records belonged to Dr. Ajay Dave, a former Memphis dentist whose license expired in 2023.

“I opened up the door, and there was a wheelchair inside. I immediately saw boxes, and I opened them up, and it looked like file folders, which looked like patient records,” Lederfine said. “I see her medical records, her X-rays, I see patient intake forms. I found billing records with the patient’s billing information, social security numbers…”

Lederfine contacted the state licensing office, which referred him to the Memphis Police Department. According to MPD, the storage unit owner had not paid rent for three months before it went to auction…
